Bonsai Plant Care Guide –
🌱 1. Sunlight
Bonsai plants need bright, indirect to gentle direct sunlight.
Provide around 4–6 hours of sunlight daily.
Morning sunlight is ideal.
Avoid harsh afternoon sunlight, especially during hot summer months.
If kept indoors, place the bonsai near a bright window or balcony.
💧 2. Watering
Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feels slightly dry.
Water slowly and thoroughly until excess water comes out from the drainage holes.
Do not keep the soil continuously soggy.
Avoid fixed daily watering—watering frequency depends on temperature, humidity, pot size and season.
Reduce watering during cold/winter periods if the soil remains moist for longer.
🪴 3. Soil
Use a well-draining, airy bonsai soil mix.
Recommended mix:
40% garden soil/cocopeat
30% compost or vermicompost
30% sand/perlite/bonsai growing medium
The most important point is good drainage. Water should never remain stagnant around the roots.
🌿 4. Fertilizer / Feeding
Feed the plant during its active growing season.
Use a balanced liquid fertilizer or organic fertilizer.
Apply fertilizer approximately once every 2–4 weeks, according to the fertilizer manufacturer's instructions.
Vermicompost or well-decomposed organic compost can also be used in small quantities.
Do not over-fertilize; excessive fertilizer can damage the roots.
🌡️ 5. Temperature
Ideal general temperature: approximately 18–30°C.
Protect the plant from extreme heat, frost and sudden temperature changes.
In very hot weather, provide morning sunlight and bright shade during harsh afternoon hours.
💦 6. Humidity
Moderate humidity is beneficial.
Keep the plant away from direct hot air from ACs, heaters and exhaust vents.
If the indoor environment is very dry, a humidity tray or room humidifier can help.
Good air circulation is important to prevent fungal problems.
🌬️ 7. Air & Environment
Keep the bonsai in a place with:
Good ventilation
Bright natural light
Fresh air
Stable temperature
No prolonged waterlogging
Avoid keeping it in a completely dark room or in a continuously closed, poorly ventilated space.
✂️ 8. Pruning & Shaping
Regular pruning helps maintain the bonsai's compact shape.
Remove dead, damaged or diseased branches.
Trim excessive new growth to maintain the desired shape.
Use clean and sharp pruning tools.
Avoid removing too much foliage at one time.
🔄 9. Pot Rotation
Rotate the pot once every 1–2 weeks so different sides of the plant receive light. This helps encourage more balanced growth.
🪴 10. Repotting
Repot when the roots become heavily crowded or the soil becomes compacted.
Generally, repotting may be required every 1–3 years, depending on the plant species and growth.
Always use a pot with proper drainage holes.
Avoid unnecessarily disturbing the roots.
🐛 11. Pest & Disease Care
Check regularly for:
Aphids
Mealybugs
Scale insects
Spider mites
Fungus
For minor infestations, wipe the leaves and affected areas gently and use an appropriate plant-safe treatment according to its label.
🍃 12. Leaf Care
Keep leaves free from excessive dust.
Gently wipe large leaves with a soft, damp cloth when necessary.
Avoid using household cleaning products or oils that are not intended for plants.
⚠️ 13. Common Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Overwatering
❌ Keeping the soil permanently wet
❌ Keeping the plant in complete shade
❌ Sudden relocation from shade to strong sunlight
❌ Excessive fertilizer
❌ Using a pot without drainage
❌ Heavy pruning all at once
❌ Keeping the plant near AC/heater vents
